Recycling an unwanted computer sounds like a good choice, but it’s really shortsighted when considering the many benefits of computer reuse.

It’s Good for your budget
A used computer is up to 70% less expensive than a comparable new computer, which means buying a used computer extends your technology budget.

It's Good for the Environment
Ewaste, is the fastest growing form of municipal waste in the U.S. Over 50 million tons of ewaste is recycled each year. Computer reuse extends the life of a used computer which keeps old computer parts from a landfill. According to the EPA, reusing just one computer with a standard monitor prevents emission of over 1,000 pounds of carbon dioxide.

It's Good for others
An increasing amount of social services, educational programs, and employment opportunities are only available to people that have access to computer technology. But many people and organizations on limited budgets can’t afford new equipment. Used computers are less expensive, making them affordable to all.

Reusing just one computer with a monitor saves:

  • 30 lbs of hazardous waste
  • 77 lbs of solid waste
  • 147 lbs (17.5 gallons) of water from being polluted
  • 32 tons of air from being polluted
  • 1,333 lbs of CO2 from being emitted
  • 7,719 kilowatts of energy

Reusing 100 computers with a monitor:

  • Saves enough electricity to power 68 U.S. households in a year
  • Same as removing 48 passenger cars from the road per year
  • Reduces hazardous waste by the weight of 720 bricks
  • Reduces toxic materials waste by the weight of 3.97 bricks
  • Reduces the amount of Mercury in fewer than 0.01 mercury fever thermometers
  • Reduces air emissions by 3,508.7 U.S. tons
